Kozhikode: Sudden cardiac arrest can happen at any time, to anyone, of any age, in any location. It is the leading cause of death in Kerala, with nearly four out of five cases occurring outside a hospital. Bystanders–whether in a public gathering space such as an airport or shopping mall, or in a workplace–play an in important role in improving the chances of survival. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a small portable device which can deliver an electric shock to a person's heart. This shock can help the heart to return to a normal beating rhythm. The AED is simple device which can be handled by any layman by following simple instruction.
Using an AED immediately after sudden cardiac arrest can increase the chance of survival by more than 90%. The survival rate is reduced by approximately 10% for each minute that defibrillation is delayed. The combination of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and AED can literally bring a person back to life!
