Histopathology

The department of Pathology in BMH is a 22 year old NABH, NABL, ISO accredited laboratory catering to the pathology requirements of districts of Calicut, Malappuram and Kannur.

We have all facilities for routine Histopathology, Oncopathology, GI pathology, Hematopathology, Renal pathology, Dermatopathology, and Cytopathology.

Manpower: Headed by 4 Histopathologists, with expertise in respective fields of Pathology, who handle these specialised fields exclusively, supported by well-trained technical staff, and a clinical research assistant.

Services & Facilities

  • Oncopathology: Fully automated processors , Cryostat and fully automated Immunohistochemistry and ISH platforms . We are a leading reference Immunohistochemistry laboratory in Kerala, with more than 150 IHC antibodies and EBER-ISH.
    We are members of and participate actively in Multidisciplinary Tumour Board meetings held every Mondays and Thursdays.
  • Hematopathology: 10 colour flow cytometry equipment . We are doing all lymphoma /leukaemia diagnostic immunophenotyping, and MRD for leukaemia and myelomas.
    We do the required complete IHC panel for lymphoma typing, including EBER-ISH.
  • Renal pathology: We are doing routine renal biopsies with special stains and Immunofluorescence.
  • GI pathology: We are doing routine small endoscopic biopsies, liver biopsies with required special stains, handle major resections with frozen sections and GI oncopathology.
  • Lung pathology: We routinely handle pleural, endobronchial, lung biopsies, EBUS specimens and major resections with requisite ancillary immunohistochemistry.
  • Gynec pathology: We are doing all small biopsies and Gynaec oncopathology with frozen sections and required Immunohistochemistry.
  • Male/Female genital and Uropathology: We routinely do LBCs for cervical smears and do all required Immunohistochemistry for respective Oncopathology work.
  • Head and Neck pathology: We are handling all major resection specimens with frozen section and required ancillary Immunohistochemistry.
  • Dermatopathology: We are routinely doing Immunoflourescence and required ancillary special stains.
  • Other specialised tests: Polaroscopy facilities for crystal analysis.
  • Library facilities: We have a well updated department library which includes all the standard Pathology textbooks and original WHO blue books.

Academic activities

  • The department conducts routine Clinicopathological conferences (CPCs), every Tuesdays, as hybrid sessions, open to all outside institutions.
  • The department is into conducting comprehensive Oncology and Pathology National CMEs on a 6 monthly basis.
  • We actively participate in the 6 monthly IAPM Kerala chapter meetings with paper and case presentations and also attend respective topic-based State level and National CMEs with paper and case presentations.
