Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) department at BMH specialises to restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Multidisciplinary comprehensive rehabilitation is provided by a team of qualified professionals
The BMH Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre is a comprehensive facility which provides both In-patient and out-patient based rehabilitation service to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons
In treating these patients, physiatrists lead an interdisciplinary team of physical, occupational, speech& swallow therapists, rehab nurses and clinical psychologists. In outpatient settings, physiatrists also treat patients with muscle and joint injuries, pain syndromes, non-healing wounds, and other disabling conditions
PM&R can help patients with disabling disease like stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, autism, mental retardation and chronic pain. There is a specialized goal oriented pulmonary rehabilitation service too.
With the use of physical agents and therapeutic exercise, rehabilitation can help patients in the following ways to:
- Reduce pain
- Improve quality of life for those with temporary or severe impairment
- Learn how to use assistive devices (e.g., braces, wheelchairs, etc.)

Dr. Muhlisa. V is a consultant in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, who pursued her graduation and post graduation at Government Medical College, Kozhikode. As a physiatrist, she aims to improve the functional ability and quality of life of the beneficiaries through a multidisciplinary team approach and evidence based practices for the comprehensive rehabilitation. . She has special interests in neuro rehabilitation, pain management, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and pediatric rehabilitation.
